Sunshine

Starring Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evans (yes Cap from the Avengers) with Mark Strong as the villain. The story is that of our planet in the future, the year 2057, dying as the sun is collapsing. The Earth has sent Icarus and now Icarus two into the sun to detonate a nuclear fission payload into the sun to reignite the star and save the earth and its inhabitants. This is the story of the Icarus Two’s 16 month flight into the sun.

On the way to the sun the Icarus Two passes mercury, as it does so a radio signal is picked up, it is the original Icarus they have passed into the deadzone so their emergency beacon couldn’t be picked up unless you were on the far side of mercury. They decide as a crew that they should dock with the Icarus and search for the crew to see if they are still alive. Whilst altering course Trey doesn’t account for moving the shield to keep the ship out of direct sunlight, as such there is damage that must be repaired. Kaneda and Capa go out to fix the panels, to do so they must sacrifice communications towers 3 and 4, which also causes a fire in the Oxygen Garden, destroying their air source as well as food. To stay on course the shield must be readjusted which results in the death of Kaneda, which Trey blames himself for.

The Icarus II docks with Icarus I, and Mace, Searle, Capa and Harvey go to search the ship for survivors and supplies. They discover an overactive oxygen garden, flourishing beautifully, but all the crew are dead. Then the airlock is manually released, leaving them stranded. How will they get back to the Icarus II, will the save the Earth and the Sun? Watch to find out, I don’t want to spoil it.

I really enjoyed this movie, it was different, a surprise. I found it quite dark with a lot of psychological elements to it, but then 16 months alone in space will take its toll.
