The Outside is a Netflix Original starring Jared Leto. This film was intense! Lots of explicit violence, blood, guns, some swords (don’t know the correct term, sorry!) I actually missed the first part of the movie but I was told that Nick (Leto) assists a man when in prison and as a result the Yakuza family he was part of got him out of jail. He then goes on to assist the family, becoming part of their life and way of working. He becomes a brother.
The strangest bit of the whole thing for me was the giving of oneself as reparation for a mistake or dishonour caused. In this case they take a very sharp knife and remove the tip of the finger at the first joint starting with the baby finger. Nick removes two tips, his brother one. You have forgive me it is done partially in english part in japanese because of the entire movie being set in 1954 Osaka, Japan, therefore I am not 100% on peoples names never mind how to write/spell them.
They show the hand tipped tattooing that is traditional in Japan, it looks amazing, and painful. Once again Netflix have created a beautiful program, and Jared Leto has taken a quirky dangerous character role. Is he typecast or does he only ever play the roles he wants (which happen to be that style)?
