This is book number thirteen in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J. R. Ward. I reviewed Blood Vow from the Black Dagger Legacy series recently which has Paradis as a main character. She is introduced to us along with a few others in the context of our existing character base.

This novel enters around iAm and Trez ‘Latimer’ both of whom are Shadows. They leave their realm because Trez is to be forced into an arranged marriage due to the stars he was born under. Trez, however has fallen in love with Serena a member of the chosen (I was so excited that we have the same name!) Amongst other drama the Shadow Queen declares war when Trez won’t adhere and get married, and iAm then falls in love too.

This one was really sweet. Less violence and less sex., more character nuance and emotional range. It made a change but I feel it is a development of Wards writing style and shows character depth and adaptability.
